Dr Florence Gabriel is a learning scientist who is interested in mathematics education. Her current research involves the complex and important question of how emotions, motivation, cognition and metacognition affect mathematical learning and achievement.

Dr Gabriel is a Lecturer in STEM education and a member of C3L, the Centre for Change and Complexity in Learning at the University of South Australia. Her specialisations include research into the anxiety that can surround the study of mathematics and ways in which this anxiety, stress or worry can be reduced.

In her time as a Policy Analyst for the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, Dr Gabriel contributed to the Future of Education and Skills 2030 project which shapes education for students to thrive in the future.

Dr Gabriel has delivered talks and workshops on numerical cognition and mathematics education across Australia and internationally. Her research has been published in Cortex, Developmental Science and Mind, Brain and Education. Her work has been featured in the media, including interviews by ABC Radio to share her expertise on maths anxiety and as a guest speaker at the Australian Council for Education Research.
